Faisalabad

Faisalabad, formerly known as Lyallpur, is the third largest metropolis in Pakistan, the second largest in the province of Punjab after Lahore, and a major industrial center in the heart of Pakistan. The city was renamed “Faisalabad” in honour of King Faisal of Saudi Arabia.

Faisalabad is the city of Textile & Industry. It is also called Manchester of Asia. It was once called the biggest village of Asia because of its rural culture, but day by day it is becoming more urbanized. It is now the third largest city of Pakistan after Karachi and Lahore.
The city was founded by the British in 1892 by Sir Charles James Lyall for whom it was originally named Lyallpur. Prior to the British making the area into an urban center, it largely consisted of various villages.

Faisalabad clock tower is one of the oldest monuments still standing in its original state from the period of the British Raj. It was built by the British, when they ruled much of the South Asia during the nineteenth century.

The majestic Clock Tower of Faisalabad was constructed out of the funds raised by the local Zamindars who collected it at a rate of Rs. 18 per square of land. The fund thus raised was handed over to the Municipal Committee which undertook to complete the project.

The locals refer to it as “Ghanta Ghar” in Urdu which translates into Hour House in English. It is located in the older part of the city. The clock is placed at the center of the eight markets that from a bird’s-eye view look like the Union Jack flag of the United Kingdom. This special layout still exists today and can be viewed using the latest software from Google Maps.
